A quiet Alabama community has been left shaken after a husband and father of two was shot and killed in front of his family outside a Walmart.
Stephen Morrow, 46, was fatally shot shortly after 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, in the parking lot of a Walmart in Sumiton, a small town about 25 miles outside Birmingham.
What began as a routine evening trip to the store turned into an unthinkable nightmare for the Morrow family.
According to reports, 18-year-old Timothy Braden Crawford allegedly opened fire in the parking lot, striking Morrow. He was rushed to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he was later pronounced dead.
His devastated wife, Kayla Morrow, later shared the heartbreaking words her husband said to her in his final moments.
“I’m not okay… idk how to feel; what to think; anything in general. I’m completely numb,” Kayla wrote in an emotional Facebook post.
She said she had been awake for nearly 40 hours and could not close her eyes without reliving the horror.
“Every time I close my eyes all I can see is the scene happening,” she wrote. “His last words to me were: ‘Kayla, I’m dying and I love you.’”
Kayla said the tragedy has been especially devastating for the couple’s son, Eli.
“This is the hardest thing I have ever had to witness,” she wrote. “Eli took it really hard. He’s doing okay at the moment. Seeing his little face wrecked me. Please continue praying for the Morrows.”
She also thanked friends, relatives and members of the community for their support, saying she has seen the messages even if she cannot respond right now.
“We need all the prayers we can get right now,” she added.
Several days after the shooting, the Sumiton Police Department announced that Crawford had been arrested and charged in connection with Morrow’s death.
Crawford is expected to appear in court on June 9 for a bail hearing, followed by a preliminary hearing on June 16.
Authorities have not said whether Crawford and Morrow knew each other, and a possible motive has not been released. The shooting remains under investigation.
The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville is conducting an autopsy.
Morrow’s obituary remembered him as a man who loved fishing, cars and, above all, his son Elijah.
A memorial fund has been set up for the family, with donations accepted at any Synovus Bank location. A GoFundMe page has also been created to help Kayla and Eli with funeral expenses and the difficult road ahead.
“Kayla is a devoted mother who has always worked hard to provide a loving home for her son, Eli,” the fundraiser reads. “Recently, her world was turned upside down when her husband, Stephen, was tragically shot and passed away.”
The page says Kayla is now facing life as a single parent while dealing with overwhelming grief and sudden financial hardship.
“The funds raised through this campaign will help Kayla cover funeral expenses, manage daily living costs, and provide some security for Eli’s future,” the fundraiser states.
The deadly shooting has left friends, family and neighbors mourning a father whose life was cut short during an ordinary trip to Walmart.

Sorry for the family loss.🙏💔
