A father of three is being remembered as a hero after he died from horrific injuries suffered while trying to save a woman from an alleged attack at an Ohio gas station.

Billy Grooms, 49, was with his son at a gas station in Hillsboro in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 31, when they allegedly saw a young woman being strangled.

Without hesitation, Grooms stepped in.

Moments later, police say the suspect ran him over with a truck.

Grooms was rushed to the hospital with devastating injuries, including multiple broken bones and a severe brain injury. Doctors placed him on life support as his family prayed for a miracle.

But just days later, on Thursday, June 4, Grooms was taken off life support.

“We were trying for hope,” his wife, Amy Grooms, told FOX19. “If we could try to intervene to stop the swelling, but then within days, he was declining.”

Authorities identified the suspect as 22-year-old Javen Meadows.

According to court records cited by FOX19, Meadows allegedly pulled into the gas station in a Ford F-150 just after 2:30 a.m. and hit another truck while parking.

Investigators say Meadows then walked over to that truck, grabbed a woman by the neck, threw her to the ground and kicked her.

When the woman managed to get back up, Meadows allegedly took her phone and punched her to the ground before returning to his vehicle.

That is when Grooms tried to intervene.

Police say Meadows then ran him over.

Court records reportedly state that Meadows had followed his ex-girlfriend to the gas station. It remains unclear whether the woman he allegedly attacked was that ex-girlfriend.

Meadows has been charged with strangulation and assault in connection with the alleged attack on the woman.

As of the latest report, he has not been charged in connection with Grooms’ death, though Hillsboro Police said additional charges are pending.

The woman who was attacked said Grooms’ brave decision to step in may have saved her life.

“I believe his actions saved my life,” she told FOX19. “I’ll carry that gratitude with me forever.”

Grooms’ grieving family is now trying to process the unbearable loss of a man they say spent his life helping others.

“We’re still trying to wrap our minds around the fact that his life is gone for saving a young girl who was being strangled,” his sister-in-law, Angela Osborn, told FOX19.

Even in death, his family says Grooms will continue helping people. His organs are set to be donated.

“He has just been that person to save as many people as he can — and he’s going to continue to by these organ donations,” Osborn said.

A GoFundMe created to support Grooms’ family has raised more than $30,000.

The Hillsboro Police Department and Hillsboro Municipal Court have been contacted for comment.
