Kamala Harris is raising eyebrows after reportedly leaving the family home behind and settling into a lavish Malibu mansion without husband Doug Emhoff.
The former vice president, 61, is said to be using the pricey coastal hideaway as a private retreat while she weighs another run for the White House. But according to insiders, the move has also fueled fresh whispers that her marriage to Emhoff may be under serious strain.
Sources claim Harris has been laser-focused on political comeback plans after her crushing 2024 election loss to President Donald Trump. Emhoff, however, reportedly has little appetite for another brutal campaign season.
“Kamala is focused on trying to win the Democratic nomination again, with or without Doug’s support,” one insider claimed.
The alleged tension comes after a bruising election cycle that reportedly put the couple’s 11-year marriage under a harsh spotlight.
During the 2024 race, Emhoff’s past affair with a family nanny resurfaced publicly, along with reports that the relationship led to an aborted pregnancy and helped end his first marriage.
“That was an embarrassing revelation that did her candidacy no favors,” an insider said. “The demands on Emhoff during the entire campaign put a strain on their marriage.”
Harris herself has admitted in her memoir, 107 Days, that the final stretch of the campaign brought tense moments between the couple.
In one passage, she recalled Emhoff arriving for her birthday after a campaign event in Michigan, describing him as tired and distracted. Harris wrote that he had not made plans for where they would stay or what they would do for dinner.
Now, insiders claim the fallout from the election may have left lasting damage.
Harris is reportedly still determined to repair her political image and prove she can mount another serious White House bid. Emhoff, meanwhile, is said to want a quieter life far away from the attacks, scandals and constant scrutiny that come with national politics.
“Both of their images were battered in the last election,” a source claimed. “The last thing Emhoff wanted was for his affair to become public fodder, and all the criticism of her performance added to the strain between them.”
The Malibu move has only intensified speculation.
While some neighbors reportedly view the mansion as a peaceful retreat, insiders claim it could be a sign Harris is preparing for another high-stakes campaign — one Emhoff may not want to be part of.
“He wants her to quit so they can go back to living a private life,” the insider alleged. “Another White House run will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.”
