Savannah Guthrie left Today viewers doing a double take after she abruptly disappeared in the middle of Wednesday’s live broadcast — with co-host Craig Melvin forced to explain her sudden exit on air.
“She had to leave a little early,” Melvin casually told viewers during the May 6 episode, but the brief explanation only fueled even more speculation online as fans scrambled to figure out what happened to the longtime NBC anchor.
The awkward moment came during a segment that had already taken a dark turn, as the Today team discussed the chilling disappearance of Arizona woman Nancy Guthrie — a bizarre case that has stunned investigators and left authorities racing for answers.
According to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, investigators have now uncovered DNA evidence inside Nancy’s home, which police officially declared a crime scene.
“We took some samples that we hope will have enough of a DNA profile,” Nanos told NBC News in a report shared on Today back on Feb. 3, “that will give us some identification as to what we’re looking at.”
The mystery only deepened days later when officials revealed a disturbing timeline surrounding Nancy’s disappearance.
Authorities said Nancy had returned home after visiting family, but just hours later, strange events began unfolding in the middle of the night.
“At 1:47 a.m., the doorbell camera disconnects,” Sheriff Nanos explained during a Feb. 5 press conference.
Even more eerie, the system reportedly detected someone near the camera moments before the footage mysteriously vanished. Because Nancy did not have a paid subscription service, the clip was automatically overwritten before investigators could immediately retrieve it.
But detectives refused to give up.
“At 2:28 a.m., Nancy’s pacemaker app shows there was a disconnect from the phone,” Nanos continued. “At 11:56 a.m., the family checks on Nancy and discovers her missing, and at 12:03 p.m., 911 is called.”
Within minutes, deputies flooded the scene.
“Our patrol teams arrive. They see the scene and we start our response with our search-and-rescue teams, and our detectives on various units,” the sheriff said.
Then came the bombshell development that sent shockwaves through the investigation.
On Feb. 10, authorities released haunting surveillance photos showing a mysterious masked figure outside Nancy’s home. The images — recovered from damaged camera data — appear to show an armed person wearing a ski mask and backpack approaching the property before allegedly striking the camera.
Investigators believe the suspect may have intentionally tampered with the recording device.
“Law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance,” officials said in a statement.
The creepy surveillance images instantly ignited online chatter, with many viewers calling the case “terrifying” and “straight out of a crime thriller.”
Meanwhile, Savannah’s sudden on-air exit only added another layer of intrigue to an already emotional broadcast, leaving worried fans flooding social media with questions about the beloved Today star.
