What was supposed to be a high-octane thrill show turned into a nightmare in Popayán, where a monster truck plowed straight into a crowd — leaving three people dead and dozens more injured in a scene witnesses are calling pure chaos.
The terrifying incident unfolded Sunday in the southern Colombian city, when a massive blue monster truck suddenly lost control mid-show. According to police, the driver’s brakes appear to have failed — sending the vehicle barreling through a barrier and straight into a packed crowd of spectators.
Horrifying video from the scene shows people scrambling in all directions as the out-of-control truck tears through the area, knocking over motorcycles and slamming into victims before finally coming to a stop after crashing into an electricity pole.
Authorities say at least 38 people were injured in the mayhem, with victims rushed to nearby hospitals. Among the dead is a 10-year-old girl, whose life was tragically cut short at the scene, according to local officials.
Police commander Julián Castañeda revealed early findings suggest a catastrophic mechanical failure.
“The vehicle accelerated, it couldn’t brake,” he said, noting that the driver survived and is currently in stable condition.
Local leaders are now under pressure to explain how such a disaster could happen at a public event. Mayor Juan Carlos Muñoz Bravo vowed a full investigation, calling the tragedy unacceptable.
“These events, which should never have happened, will be clarified with total responsibility and transparency,” he said.
Regional governor Octavio Guzmán also spoke out, offering condolences to the victims’ families and the shaken community.
As investigators dig deeper into what went wrong, one thing is clear — a day meant for entertainment turned into a devastating disaster in seconds, leaving a community grieving and demanding answers.
