Elderly Woman Dies After Snake Bites Her 3 Times During Walk

A peaceful stroll turned into a nightmare when a 78-year-old Northern California woman was fatally bitten not once, but three times by a venomous snake in a shocking encounter that has rattled residents across the state.

The woman, who has not yet been publicly identified, was walking through a rural stretch of Redwood Valley on April 8 when the terrifying attack unfolded, according to reports from the Los Angeles Times and ABC News. Authorities say she suffered multiple bites during the encounter, believed to involve a rattlesnake—the only venomous snake species native to California.

Family members rushed her to a nearby hospital, but the damage had already been done. Despite medical efforts, her condition rapidly deteriorated over the next two days. On April 10, she was pronounced dead.

Officials later confirmed the cause of death as “disseminated intravascular coagulopathy and snake envenomation,” a deadly combination where venom disrupts the body’s ability to clot blood, leading to catastrophic internal complications.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office has not released further details about the exact species involved, but experts say rattlesnake encounters can escalate quickly—especially during warmer months when the reptiles are more active.

This tragic case marks the third fatal snakebite in California this year alone, raising alarm among both residents and wildlife officials.

Just weeks earlier, a 46-year-old woman died after being bitten by a rattlesnake while hiking. She was airlifted to a hospital following the March 14 incident but succumbed to the venom days later, according to local reports. Medical officials confirmed she died from rattlesnake venom toxicity.

Experts with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife warn that avoiding snake encounters starts with awareness. Even snakes that appear lifeless can strike without warning. The advice is simple but critical: keep your distance, stay alert, and never underestimate how quickly a situation can turn deadly.

As California heads deeper into snake season, this latest tragedy serves as a chilling reminder that danger can be lurking just steps off the trail.
