Trucker Dad Dies After Being Struck by Lightning in Wisconsin

A routine stop turned into a nightmare in the Midwest after a truck driver and father was struck down in a freak lightning blast that witnesses say sounded like an explosion.

41-year-old Peter Garamone, a Pennsylvania native hauling freight through Wisconsin, was at a Kwik Trip gas station in Pewaukee on April 15 when a bolt of lightning suddenly struck him during a storm. What makes the tragedy even more chilling is that Garamone was still conscious long enough to call 911 himself and report what had just happened.

Emergency audio later revealed the dispatcher warning paramedics that the caller believed he had been hit by lightning. By the time first responders arrived, the situation had taken a devastating turn. Garamone was found unresponsive and rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

Another shaken witness also dialed 911, telling dispatchers they weren’t even sure the trucker was still breathing.

One nearby resident, Beau Snowden, said the moment felt unreal. “It was the loudest thunderbolt we ever heard,” he said, describing a blast so intense it rattled the area and left neighbors stunned. “You’ve got to watch out for these storms. It’s really dangerous.”

Garamone leaves behind his wife, Lisa, and young son, Peter Jr. In a heartbreaking twist, his death came just weeks after his father celebrated beating cancer, ringing the remission bell after grueling treatments.

The shocking incident is believed to be the first lightning-related death in the U.S. this year, but it’s not the only recent close call. Just days earlier, a woman in Colorado was struck while jogging and left fighting for her life before eventually being identified and reunited with her family.

What should have been just another stop on the road ended in an unthinkable tragedy — a brutal reminder of how quickly nature can turn deadly.
