A small Illinois community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of a high school athlete who died after being struck in the head by a baseball during practice.
Bentley Wolfe, a 15-year-old sophomore at Chrisman High School, was critically injured on March 2 when a line drive hit him during baseball practice, according to local authorities. The accident happened in Chrisman, a small town in Edgar County near the Illinois–Indiana border.
Bentley played baseball for the Georgetown Buffaloes and was also a member of the Chrisman Cardinals basketball team.
After the impact, his condition quickly worsened. The following day he was transported to OSF HealthCare St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, where he was listed in critical condition.
As family and friends waited for updates, Bentley’s mother, Samantha Simpson, shared the devastating news online.
“My life has shattered right before my eyes. I don’t know how I’m writing this post,” she wrote on Facebook. “My Bentley, our Bentley, is on life support and it’s not looking good.”
Doctors later determined that Bentley had suffered severe head trauma from the accident. He was declared brain dead on Friday, and an autopsy later confirmed he died from blunt force trauma to the head.
The tragic loss has shaken the tight-knit community.
On March 6, hundreds of classmates, friends, teachers, coaches and neighbors gathered at Chrisman High School for a candlelight prayer vigil to honor Bentley’s life.
School officials said the support from surrounding communities has been overwhelming. Several nearby schools also wore red in solidarity to show their support for Chrisman and Bentley’s family.
Bentley was deeply involved in school life beyond sports. He was an active member of the school’s FFA program, formerly known as Future Farmers of America.
According to his obituary, Bentley loved tractors, trucks and anything connected to farming. He also enjoyed riding four-wheelers, shooting guns and spending time with his friends and girlfriend.
Those who knew him say his personality left a lasting impression.
“Bentley was always positive and a bright light to every room he was in,” Chrisman FFA wrote in a tribute. “His light will continue to shine as he provides the gift of life by being an organ donor.”
In a powerful act of generosity, Bentley’s family honored his wish to be an organ donor. His mother later shared that his heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and pancreas were successfully donated to help save others.
“Bentley Kahne Wolfe will forever live on in others and in our hearts,” Simpson wrote. “His light will never go out. What a true hero I get to call my son.”

So sorry for your loss an outstanding young man that showed a great light in this world May his memories sustain you all May peace surround you all
