Pat Sajak’s surprise return to Wheel of Fortune has sparked a wave of nostalgia—and controversy. Country music star John Rich didn’t mince words after seeing Sajak host a special Celebrity Wheel of Fortune episode on December 2.
“Wheel of Fortune sucks without @patsajak,” Rich declared on X, formerly known as Twitter. He even posted a playful puzzle for his followers: “BR__ __ G B__CK P__T S__J__K.” The solution? “Bring back Pat Sajak.”
Sajak, 78, officially retired this past summer after an astounding 41 seasons as the face of the iconic game show. In his place, American Idol host Ryan Seacrest took over, a transition that many fans have struggled to embrace.
Rich isn’t alone in his critique. Social media lit up with fans lamenting the show’s new direction.
“I remember when @patsajak was the weatherman in Nashville,” one viewer reminisced. “He was quirky and fun. I knew he’d go on to do something big, but I didn’t realize how big. I stopped watching WOF after he left. He was that show.”
Another fan shared, “So good seeing you! You are missed every day!”
Even before the episode aired, a teaser posted on Instagram showing Sajak slipping into his trademark suit and tie sent fans into a frenzy.
“Nothing against Ryan, but I haven’t watched the show since Pat left,” one commenter admitted. “It’s just not the same.”
Others echoed similar sentiments during the broadcast.
“PAT! So happy to see you on tonight!” one viewer exclaimed. Another gushed, “Omg, I can’t tell you how excited I am to see Pat back! I gave it one week with Ryan and haven’t watched since.”
“Ryan is great,” one fan noted, “but we all miss you, Pat. Hope you’re enjoying retirement.”
Sajak’s career on Wheel of Fortune began in 1981, turning the show into a nightly ritual for millions of viewers. His dry humor, quick wit, and chemistry with co-host Vanna White became trademarks of the series.
When Sajak announced his retirement in 2023, it marked the end of an era. Seacrest, known for his charm and polished hosting skills, acknowledged the challenge of stepping into Sajak’s shoes.
“This is a dream job,” Seacrest said at the time. “I know I have some very big shoes to fill.”
Despite Seacrest’s efforts, many fans still yearn for the familiarity and comfort Sajak brought to their screens.
As one viewer put it simply, “He’s the best of the best.”
Wheel of Fortune representatives have yet to comment on the reaction to Sajak’s return.

I like the show and the new design too. Ryan doing a good job and really good with the contestants. I miss Pat too but things change. I watch every day!
How can you talk bad about Ryan when you say you haven’t watched it since Pat left. I like Ryan he seems to be more personal with the contestants. I like that. Pat couldn’t stay forever. Give Ryan a chance
Show lost it’s easy flow Ryan seems to think every second needs to be filled with a word, need to explore different host like they did on Jeppordy maybe ill start wathing again, Butch
Get a life , adapt. Ryan Seacrest is doing well on the show.
THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE NOW IS TOO HYPER , LOUD. , EVREYONE IS SHOUTING. ALWAYS ADDING REMARKS OF HIMSELF — ADDED TO GUEST ANSWERS. A NICE QUITE PLEASENT TIME TO EAT. DISGUSE AND QUESS THE QUESTIONS AND LOVE THE HOST.
