Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry is facing fresh scrutiny as her bitter custody battle with ex-husband Olivier Martinez grows increasingly personal, with a longtime acquaintance now making startling allegations about her temper.
The 60-year-old Hollywood star, who has spent decades maintaining a successful career while navigating several high-profile relationships, is fighting allegations that she physically abused her 13-year-old son, Maceo.
Berry has strongly denied the accusations, describing them as misleading and without merit.
But a new report has added another layer of controversy to the already contentious legal dispute.
According to Page Six, someone who has known Berry for years claims the actress can experience dramatic changes in her mood, sometimes becoming angry without much warning.
“Halle can be the loveliest human being you’ve ever met, then within seconds she’ll fly into a rage,” the unnamed source alleged.
The insider also claimed that people close to Berry have witnessed similar behavior over the years.
Those statements, however, remain the source’s personal characterization. They do not establish that Berry has any medical or psychological condition, nor do they prove the allegations involving her son.
In fact, the same source acknowledged that the actress’s alleged temperament does not mean she is guilty of wrongdoing.
The latest claims come as Berry and Martinez, 60, remain locked in a contentious courtroom battle over their only child together.
The former couple married in 2013, welcomed Maceo that same year and announced their separation in 2015.
Their divorce was not finalized until 2023, following years of legal disagreements over parenting arrangements and financial responsibilities.
Under their previous agreement, the parents shared custody of Maceo, while Berry was required to pay Martinez $8,000 a month in child support, along with additional expenses.
But their arrangement dramatically changed following an alleged confrontation on September 26.
In court documents filed in Los Angeles, Martinez accused Berry of physically assaulting their son during an argument at her home.
He alleged that Berry placed her hands around the teenager’s neck and used a wrestling-style hold during the confrontation.
Martinez subsequently requested a domestic violence restraining order and sought sole legal and physical custody.
A judge granted temporary protective measures, leaving Martinez with primary custody while the dispute proceeds.
Berry has disputed his account of the confrontation and insists she has never abused her son.
Through her attorneys, the actress described Martinez’s allegations as meritless and deliberately misleading.
She has also accused her former husband of attempting to manipulate the custody proceedings and influence their son’s statements.
Those accusations are similarly disputed, and the court has not made a final determination about the underlying allegations.
The situation has become even more complicated because Maceo may now be asked to provide testimony about what happened.
Martinez has argued that their son wants an opportunity to explain his experiences and express his custody preferences.
Berry opposed allowing the teenager’s testimony to carry significant weight, raising concerns that prolonged exposure to the legal dispute could influence his account.
She has suggested that adult witnesses who were present during the alleged incident should also be considered.
On October 14, a judge ruled that Maceo could testify during the custody proceedings.
The decision marked an important development in the case, although it did not establish the truth of either parent’s allegations.
Meanwhile, Berry has received significant support from an unexpected participant in the dispute.
Her 18-year-old daughter, Nahla Aubry, submitted a court declaration defending her mother.
Nahla, whose father is Canadian model Gabriel Aubry, described Berry as a loving and devoted parent who has always been actively involved in her children’s lives.
She acknowledged that her mother could be strict but rejected the suggestion that she had witnessed abusive parenting.
“I never observed anything abusive about her parenting,” Nahla stated.
In other portions of her declaration, the teenager said she had never seen her mother behave violently toward anyone.
Her statement directly challenges the portrait of Berry presented in Martinez’s legal filings.
But Martinez’s attorneys have questioned whether Nahla’s testimony is relevant to the specific incident involving Maceo.
The disagreement illustrates how deeply the former couple’s conflict has divided their accounts of family life.
Berry’s fiancé, musician Van Hunt, has also provided a statement supporting her version of events.
The actress has maintained that the September confrontation has been misrepresented and that Martinez is using the legal system to gain greater control over their parenting arrangement.
Martinez, meanwhile, maintains that his actions are intended to protect their son.
Both parents have accused the other of contributing to the breakdown of their ability to cooperate.
The latest allegations about Berry’s temperament have also brought renewed attention to her previous relationships.
Before marrying Martinez, Berry was involved in a prolonged custody dispute with Gabriel Aubry following their separation in 2010.
That case included disagreements over parenting arrangements, travel and financial support for Nahla.
In 2014, a court ordered Berry to pay Aubry $16,000 a month in child support, along with certain additional expenses.
The legal disagreements attracted extensive media coverage, particularly after Martinez and Aubry became involved in a physical confrontation outside Berry’s home in 2012.
The incident became another highly publicized chapter in Berry’s complicated family history.
Her past legal troubles have also resurfaced in coverage of the current dispute.
In 2000, Berry was involved in a traffic collision in Hollywood and subsequently pleaded no contest to leaving the scene of an accident.
She received probation, a fine and community service.
Although that incident is part of her public record, it occurred more than two decades before the present custody dispute and does not establish the truth of Martinez’s accusations.
Similarly, the new comments from an anonymous acquaintance cannot substitute for evidence about what occurred between Berry and her son.
The actress has faced other controversies throughout her career, but she has also spoken publicly about surviving abusive relationships and advocating for people affected by domestic violence.
She has pointed to that personal history while rejecting the claims made against her.
Despite the turmoil in her private life, Berry remains one of Hollywood’s most recognizable performers.
She made history in 2002 when she became the first Black woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, receiving the honor for her performance in Monster’s Ball.
Her other major films include Die Another Day, X-Men, Gothika and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.
More recently, she has continued acting and producing while pursuing business ventures and advocating for women’s health.
In August, Berry celebrated her 60th birthday, marking another milestone in a career that has spanned more than three decades.
But the ongoing custody proceedings have placed her family life under intense public examination.
The latest Page Six report suggests that acquaintances have differing views of the actress’s temperament, while court documents reveal two sharply conflicting accounts of her relationship with Maceo.
For Berry, the immediate priority is challenging the temporary custody arrangements and defending herself against allegations she insists are false.
For Martinez, the focus remains on securing the parenting arrangement he believes will best protect their son.
And for the court, the central issue is not celebrity reputation or anonymous speculation, but the evidence presented about the child’s welfare.
Further proceedings are expected to address the competing allegations, witness statements and Maceo’s possible testimony.
Until those matters are resolved, the accusations against Berry remain disputed.
What is certain is that the legal fight between the former spouses has become one of Hollywood’s most intensely scrutinized family disputes, with both parents facing serious questions about what should happen next.
