‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Reveals Wife Died Suddenly After Massive Stroke

Former “Grey’s Anatomy” star Isaiah Washington has revealed that his wife of nearly three decades died after suffering a massive hemorrhagic stroke, opening up about the devastating loss for the first time more than a year later.

Washington, 63, said his wife, Jenisa Washington, suddenly collapsed on May 31, 2025. She never recovered and died nine days later on June 9.

“Yes…the rumors are true. My dear wife of 29 years collapsed suddenly on May 31, 2025 and passed away on June 9, 2025,” Washington wrote in an Instagram post on Oct. 3.

“It came as a huge shock to me and our entire family,” he continued. “She succumbed to a massive hemorrhagic stroke and never recovered.”

Washington also shared a deeply personal warning with his followers, urging people not to automatically dismiss unusual or severe headaches.

“Listen, y’all…some headaches are not just headaches or migraines, they can be much worse and a warning sign,” he wrote.

While Washington encouraged his followers to consider getting checked, medical experts stress that people experiencing possible signs of a stroke should seek emergency medical care rather than attempting to diagnose the problem themselves.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, stroke symptoms can include sudden numbness or weakness, confusion, difficulty speaking, vision problems, dizziness or loss of balance, and a sudden severe headache with no known cause.

The American Stroke Association uses the acronym B.E. F.A.S.T. to help people remember some of the most important warning signs: balance problems, eye or vision changes, facial drooping, arm weakness and speech difficulties. Anyone experiencing those symptoms should call 911 immediately.

A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in or around the brain ruptures and causes bleeding. The bleeding can damage surrounding brain tissue and, depending on its location and severity, can lead to permanent disability or death.

Washington did not disclose further details about what caused his wife’s stroke.

The actor acknowledged that speaking publicly about Jenisa’s death was difficult because she deliberately stayed away from the spotlight throughout much of his Hollywood career.

“She has been gone 16 months now, but she left 3 incredibly amazing children behind to continue her legacy,” Washington wrote.

“I don’t know if this is an appropriate post, because Jenisa Washington was extremely private, but I guess I just have to be reprimanded from her on the other side.”

The couple shared three children, Isaiah V, Tyme and Iman.

Washington’s announcement quickly drew messages of sympathy from fans and fellow performers.

Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis was among those offering support, writing, “So very sorry Isaiah.”

Other followers expressed surprise that Washington and his family had been grieving privately for so long.

Some also said his warning about headaches struck particularly close to home, with commenters sharing their own experiences involving migraines, emergency room visits and strokes.

Washington and Jenisa reportedly met at a dinner party in Los Angeles before marrying on Valentine’s Day in 1996.

The actor has previously spoken about the enormous influence his marriage and children had on his career.

During a 2022 interview, Washington said becoming a husband and father changed the types of acting roles he was willing to accept because he often considered how his children might eventually view his work.

“For me, being married and having children did change a lot of my trajectory,” he said at the time.

Washington became widely known for playing cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Preston Burke on ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy.”

He starred in the medical drama during its first three seasons from 2005 through 2007. Burke was both a mentor and romantic partner to Sandra Oh’s Cristina Yang, becoming one of the show’s most prominent characters during its early years.

Washington later returned to “Grey’s Anatomy” for a guest appearance in 2014.

His other acting credits include films such as “Crooklyn,” “Clockers,” “Romeo Must Die” and “Hollywood Homicide.” He also starred in and directed the Western “Corsicana.”

For Washington, however, his latest public message had little to do with Hollywood.

Sixteen months after Jenisa’s death, he appeared focused on honoring the private life they built together while hoping that sharing what happened to her might encourage someone else to recognize a potentially dangerous medical emergency before it is too late.
