A 21-year-old University of Georgia senior is awake and talking after surviving a terrifying eight-story plunge from the window of an off-campus apartment — a fall that left her with multiple broken bones but stunned family members and fellow students by not taking her life.
Kristin Sargent remains in intensive care following the Saturday night accident at Rambler Athens, a student apartment complex on West Broad Street near the University of Georgia campus.
Her father, Richard Sargent, said his daughter understands just how fortunate she is.
“She was talking to one of her friends and saying, ‘Hey, I’m alive. I can’t believe it,’” he told Atlanta station WSB-TV.
Police said the accident happened on Sept. 26 while Sargent was inside an eighth-floor apartment.
According to investigators and witnesses, she had been dancing on a couch or air mattress near an open window when she went through the window screen and plunged to the pool deck below.
First responders were called to the complex shortly before 8 p.m.
Police found Sargent near the pool area and discovered evidence suggesting she may have struck a metal bench or lounge chair during the fall. A cushion reportedly had blood on it and part of the bench was broken.
That piece of furniture may ultimately have helped slow her fall, although authorities have not officially determined exactly how much of a role it played.
Sargent was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.
Despite suffering several broken bones, she survived and was conscious and able to communicate.
Her recovery has left those around her amazed considering the distance she fell.
“She’s a good fighter, and so she’s going to be okay,” her father said.
The accident happened on an already emotional night in Athens.
Earlier that day, the Georgia Bulldogs had defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 41–13 at Sanford Stadium, sending students across the college town into celebration.
Richard Sargent said the accident occurred after the game, although he declined to discuss the precise circumstances surrounding his daughter’s fall.
“University of Georgia just won a football game,” he said. “I bet there were a lot of kids here who were 21 years old who were super happy.”
Sargent, who is studying finance and marketing at UGA, has reportedly received an outpouring of support from friends, students and members of the university community.
A large poster filled with messages of encouragement was placed inside the apartment complex as she continued recovering in the hospital.
The frightening accident has also raised questions about the eighth-floor window.
After the fall, Rambler Athens sent residents a message reminding them that windows throughout the complex are equipped with safety limiters designed to restrict how far they can open.
Management warned residents not to tamper with, remove or disengage the devices and urged anyone experiencing problems with a window or limiter to contact the property management team.
However, there is currently no indication that investigators have determined whether the limiter on the window involved in Sargent’s fall was engaged, altered or malfunctioning at the time.
Rambler Athens said it was gathering information and cooperating as authorities reviewed what happened.
“Our thoughts are with the resident and their family,” management said in a statement. “We are grateful to learn they are receiving treatment.”
Police have described the incident as an ongoing investigation, but there has been no indication of foul play.
For Sargent’s family, the questions surrounding the accident can wait.
Their focus is on the remarkable fact that after falling eight stories, their daughter is still here — awake, talking and fighting her way toward recovery.

Like me, she landed in the hand of GOD! Yes, Miracles are everywhere still in this evil World.
