Prince Harry’s plans to honor Princess Diana on the 30th anniversary of her death could create an uncomfortable royal calendar clash in 2027, with Queen Camilla celebrating a major milestone of her own just weeks earlier.
The Duke of Sussex is considering several ways to commemorate his late mother ahead of August 31, 2027, including the possibility of a documentary examining Diana’s life and legacy.
However, reports stressing Harry’s plans remain preliminary. PEOPLE reported this week that a documentary is one of several ideas being explored and that no project has been finalized or officially confirmed. Harry has also reportedly contacted relatives and friends who knew Diana as he considers how to mark the anniversary.
The timing could nevertheless guarantee an unusually intense period of attention on Britain’s royal family.
Queen Camilla was born on July 17, 1947, according to the Royal Family’s official biography, meaning she will celebrate her 80th birthday on July 17, 2027.
Diana’s 30th death anniversary follows just 45 days later.
That close timing has fueled speculation that renewed worldwide interest in Diana could compete with coverage surrounding Camilla’s milestone birthday. RadarOnline reported that unnamed royal sources are concerned a major Harry-led tribute could dominate international headlines during that period.
There is currently no indication Harry is attempting to compete with Camilla or interfere with her birthday celebrations.
Instead, the anniversary has long been expected to carry enormous personal significance for Diana’s sons.
Diana died on August 31, 1997, after the car carrying her crashed in the Pont de l’Alma underpass in Paris. She was 36. Her companion Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul also died, while bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones survived. The Royal Family’s official account records that Diana was taken to Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery before being pronounced dead.
Harry was just 12 years old at the time. Prince William was 15.
The brothers previously came together ahead of the 20th anniversary of their mother’s death, appearing in the 2017 documentary “Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy.”
A decade later, the circumstances are dramatically different. Harry and William have been publicly estranged for years, making any major Diana anniversary project involving only one brother likely to attract intense attention.
The approaching anniversary is already bringing Diana back into the headlines.
Her younger brother, Charles Spencer, recently released “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister,” a memoir filled with previously undisclosed claims about Diana’s marriage, death and funeral.
Among the book’s most explosive allegations is Spencer’s claim that the then-Prince Charles told him during an argument over Diana’s funeral arrangements, “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough.”
Buckingham Palace took the unusual step of publicly challenging Spencer’s account.
A palace spokesperson said that while the institution does not normally comment on books, King Charles believes grief can affect memory and judgment over time. Spencer subsequently stood by his version of events and insisted his recollection was accurate.
The dispute has already returned the complicated relationship between Diana, Charles and the wider royal institution to the center of public discussion.
Associated Press reported that Spencer’s memoir also challenges the way Diana’s funeral was handled and recounts his objections to William and Harry walking behind their mother’s coffin. Buckingham Palace has disputed portions of Spencer’s version of events.
That controversy could make the 2027 anniversary even more closely watched.
Spencer himself has said the approaching 30-year milestone helped motivate him to write the book, explaining that he wanted to record his own memories rather than continually respond to other people’s interpretations of his sister’s life.
Harry has also spoken repeatedly over the years about keeping Diana’s memory alive.
Whatever form his 2027 tribute ultimately takes, interest is likely to extend far beyond Britain. Diana remained one of the most recognizable women in the world after her 1996 divorce from Charles and became particularly associated with humanitarian causes including HIV and AIDS awareness and the campaign against landmines.
But the most important detail for now is that Harry’s reported documentary remains only a possibility.
No release date, broadcaster or production partner has been announced, and there has been no confirmation that a finished film exists.
