Family dinners are getting squeezed out of the Trump household—and Melania Trump isn’t pretending otherwise.
The first lady offered an unusually candid look behind the White House’s public image during a September 23 interview, acknowledging that time together is becoming harder to find as President Donald Trump works late and their son, Barron, embraces adulthood.
“It’s less and less the family time. It’s suffering because of it,” Melania said. “But that’s OK. We are here to work, to do a good job, and that’s what matters.”
The revealing moment came on Fox Business’s The Big Money Show, when co-host Taylor Riggs asked whether the family still gathers for Sunday dinners and how Melania manages the competing demands of work and motherhood.
Her answer painted a picture of packed schedules, missed meals and a 20-year-old son who may not mind having more space.
“And Barron is already a young man, so sometimes he’s maybe even happy that, you know, I just want to do my stuff. And that’s OK,” she said.
The comments quickly became fodder for speculation about a mother-son rift. But Melania did not describe a falling-out. Her explanation centered on busy schedules and Barron’s independence—not an argument or estrangement.
Still, her account of everyday family life was striking. Even with everyone’s responsibilities, waiting for the president to finish work apparently isn’t always an option.
“My husband is working — sometimes he’s in the Oval Office till 9:30 at night, right? So do you wait that you will have dinner? You don’t, because he’s busy. I’m busy too,” she said.
Her advice to families struggling with the same juggling act was to schedule time together in advance.

The first lady’s appearance came during a busy day of her own. She also rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange for the launch of IMPERIA, a summit focused on women’s global economic power.
Her latest remarks struck a different note from an interview earlier this year, when she emphasized how much Barron still needed her support.
“You need to be there for a child nonstop, especially when they need you, especially at that age that Barron is,” she told Maria Bartiromo in January.
Months later, her message includes giving him room to do his own thing. That is a change in emphasis, though being available to an adult child and respecting his independence are hardly mutually exclusive.
Barron’s college life has added another layer of public curiosity.
In September 2025, PEOPLE reported that he was spending a semester at New York University’s Washington, D.C., location after attending his first year in Manhattan. The report cited a source and concerned that semester, rather than confirming a permanent relocation for the remainder of his degree.
NYU’s Washington center offers classes and internships through its study-away program, giving students a way to study in the capital while remaining part of the university.
For all the speculation surrounding the famously private family, Melania’s own words offered the clearest revelation: shared evenings are becoming rarer, dinner does not always wait for the president, and Barron is increasingly interested in doing things on his own.
