Bears approaching from multiple directions. Three animals killed. And in a neighboring region, six people dead in a single month.
A string of deadly bear encounters has put Siberian communities on edge — and investigators are now asking whether officials failed to act on repeated warnings.
In Abaza, a forest town in Russia’s Khakassia region, deputy regional head Dmitry Buchenik described an alarming night as bears approached from “on all sides.” Some were driven away, while three were killed.
“The taiga town is effectively under siege by bears,” he said September 23, according to AFP. Of the animals killed, he added, “one of them was huge.” (arabnews.com)
The six reported human deaths occurred in neighboring Krasnoyarsk, rather than Abaza itself. But the separate incidents point to a broader problem facing communities where bears are turning up close to homes and workplaces.
One victim never had to venture into the wilderness to encounter danger.
A 66-year-old woman was killed in the yard of her home in Verkhny Kebezh, a village in Krasnoyarsk’s Yermakovsky district. Investigators said the bear attacked overnight on September 16, and she died at the scene.
The animal had disappeared by the time law enforcement arrived. Hunters later killed the bear, the regional Investigative Committee’s press office told Interfax. (interfax.ru)
Other victims were attacked in forest areas. AFP reported that two older residents were found dead near Podtyosovo earlier in September. A 40-year-old factory worker died after walking through the forest, while a 39-year-old logger guarding machinery was killed early September 23. (arabnews.com)
Investigators say warning signs had been piling up.
According to an Investigative Committee statement reported by Anadolu, residents submitted more than 120 bear-sighting reports across more than 15 districts, including the regional capital of Krasnoyarsk.
The committee accused responsible officials of failing to adequately address the danger despite those reports. A criminal negligence investigation will examine how authorities handled bears entering inhabited areas.
Those accusations remain under investigation; they are not findings of guilt. (aa.com.tr)
The response elsewhere in Siberia shows how much the encounters are disrupting ordinary life.
In neighboring Tomsk, Governor Vladimir Mazur announced restrictions on organized forest activities, including excursions and tourist gatherings, following increased bear encounters. Announced September 22, the measures are due to remain in place until at least November 1, Anadolu reported. (aa.com.tr)
For the communities affected, the immediate concern is keeping people safe. For investigators, the question is whether repeated sightings should have prompted stronger action before the death toll reached six.
