Portuguese soccer player Quévin Castro has died at just 25 years old after suddenly collapsing during a preseason match, sending shockwaves through the clubs and teammates he played alongside during his young career.

Castro, who previously played for several well-known English clubs, was playing for Real Sport Clube when he collapsed Saturday, Aug. 22, during a friendly against Estrela de Amadora in Portugal.

The frightening incident unfolded at Estádio das Seixas in Malveira.

Castro was rushed to a local hospital but later died, according to announcements from Real Sport Clube and the Lisbon Football Association.

His cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

Real Sport Clube said the young midfielder was much more than simply another name on its roster.

“Quevin Castro was far more than a player, he was a member of our family, leaving a mark on all those who had the privilege of knowing him, both on and off the pitch,” the club said.

The Lisbon Football Association also released a statement offering condolences to Castro’s loved ones and his club following what it called a “tragic time for Portuguese football.”

Saturday’s preseason match was postponed following Castro’s collapse.

Estrela de Amadora later expressed its “deepest sorrow” over his death and offered condolences to Castro’s family, friends and everyone at Real Sport Clube.

“Our thoughts are with all those close to him,” the club said. “Rest in peace, Quevin.”

Castro had spent several years building his career in England before eventually returning home to Portugal.

He joined West Bromwich Albion as a teenager in 2021 and went on to make his first-team debut against Arsenal in a Carabao Cup match.

He later made his first league appearance for West Brom in February 2022.

During his time in England, Castro also had loan spells with Burton Albion, Notts County and Gateshead.

He left West Bromwich Albion in the summer of 2023 and later joined York City, where he made 15 appearances before returning to Portugal.

West Bromwich Albion said the club was devastated by the news.

“The thoughts of everyone at Albion are with Quevin’s loved ones at this desperately sad time,” the team said.

The club announced that players would honor their former teammate during Sunday’s match against Burnley.

West Brom players were expected to wear black armbands, while supporters would take part in a round of applause during the 25th minute — a tribute to Castro’s age when he died.

His sudden death has left the soccer community mourning a player whose career had taken him from Portugal to England and back again, only to be cut tragically short at 25.
