Kjell Nilsson, the towering actor best known for playing the terrifying masked villain Lord Humungus in Mad Max 2, has died at the age of 76.
The Swedish-born star passed away Thursday in Queensland, Australia, after a four-year battle with kidney disease, his representative Chris Carbaugh told TMZ.
Nilsson was reportedly surrounded by family during his final moments.
Long before stepping in front of the camera, Nilsson was an Olympic-level weightlifter. His massive frame and powerful presence helped him land the role that would make him a cult movie legend.
Nilsson played Lord Humungus in the 1981 action classic Mad Max 2, which was released in the United States under the title The Road Warrior.
Wearing a metal hockey-style mask and little else, the muscle-bound villain became one of the most unforgettable characters in the Mad Max franchise.
Although Nilsson appeared in several other movies during his career, he remained most closely associated with the brutal wasteland warlord who terrorized Mel Gibson’s character in the post-apocalyptic hit.
Carbaugh remembered Nilsson as a kind and inspiring man who later worked as a weight-training coach.
He said the actor loved meeting Mad Max fans and always embraced the role that made him famous.
Nilsson was 76.
