Lionel Richie abruptly cut short a concert in Minnesota after falling ill on stage — and now fans are worried the 77-year-old music legend may be pushing himself too hard.
The “All Night Long” singer was performing at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul on the opening night of his Sing A Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire when the night suddenly took a concerning turn.

Richie had already raised eyebrows during the show when he appeared unsteady and reportedly began swaying on stage. At one point, while performing his classic hit “Dancing on the Ceiling,” he made a startling comment to the crowd.
“When you’re feeling dizzy, sit your a– down,” Richie told fans.
Moments later, after singing the ballad “Three Times a Lady,” Richie announced an unexpected intermission. But he never came back.
His band eventually left the stage, and more than 40 minutes later, saxophonist Dino Soldo returned to deliver the news fans had been dreading.
“Unfortunately, Lionel is not feeling well,” Soldo told the crowd, adding that more information would be made available.
The sudden cancellation immediately set off alarm bells online, with concertgoers claiming Richie appeared to be struggling before the show was stopped.
Some fans were sympathetic, saying the longtime superstar should not feel pressured to keep performing if he is not feeling well. Others were far more blunt, questioning whether older artists are being pushed too hard on the road.
“It’s OK to say no when they ask if you would like to do a show,” one person wrote, arguing that fans sometimes expect performers to look and move the way they did decades ago.
Another critic snapped, “Why are these old men still singing? Time to retire gracefully!”
A third fan compared the pressure on aging performers to what Michael Jackson faced near the end of his life, writing, “They make you sing and dance till the last day of your life.”
Others pointed out that Richie is not the only beloved entertainer to recently worry fans.
“Wow, first Rod Stewart now Lionel Richie,” another person wrote. “I guess these guys who are nearly 80 might wanna retire soon.”
Richie’s tour with Earth, Wind & Fire is currently scheduled for 26 dates, including major stops at Madison Square Garden in New York City and the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles before wrapping at Austin’s Moody Center on August 14.
Just one night before the concerning incident, Richie posted a message on Instagram thanking his band and crew for getting the tour ready.
“Thank you to everyone in my band and crew for all the hard work, dedication, and long hours getting us ready for this tour,” he wrote. “It takes an incredible team behind the scenes to make it all happen, and I’m grateful for each and every one of you.”
This is not the first time Richie has frustrated fans with a canceled show.
In 2023, the singer came under fire after canceling a sold-out Madison Square Garden concert about an hour after it was supposed to begin. At the time, Richie said severe weather had prevented him from flying into the New York area.
The last-minute cancellation left thousands of fans furious, especially those who had spent money on travel, hotels and tickets.
“Due to severe weather and being unable to land in the NY and surrounding areas, I’m unable to make it to the show tonight,” Richie wrote at the time. “I’m so bummed. We are rescheduling the show. Can’t wait to perform for you all.”
Now, with another concert cut short under troubling circumstances, fans are once again watching closely — and hoping the legendary singer is simply dealing with a brief illness, not something more serious.
