Veteran actor James Handy, best known for roles in Top Gun: Maverick, Jumanji, and Logan, has died after a shocking stabbing outside a home in Los Angeles.

The 81-year-old actor was found unconscious in the front yard of a residence in Tarzana, northwest Los Angeles, on Wednesday morning after police received a chilling 911 call.

According to the LAPD, the caller told dispatchers: “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”

When officers arrived at the home on Erwin Street, they found Handy suffering from a stab wound to the chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities arrested 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, who police say is the son of Handy’s girlfriend. He has been accused of murder and was being held on $2 million bail as of Thursday night.

Police said Gledhill lived at the property with his mother.

In a disturbing twist, investigators said the suspect flagged down responding officers and allegedly told them he was the person they were looking for.

“The suspect flagged down nearby responding officers, telling them he was the one they were looking for,” the LAPD said in a statement.

Detectives are still working to determine a motive in the fatal attack. Officials said the stabbing appeared to be an isolated incident and that there was no ongoing threat to the public.

Photos from the scene showed police tape surrounding the Tarzana home as investigators worked outside the property.

Handy’s agent, Pam Ellis-Evenas, confirmed the devastating news and remembered him as both a gifted actor and a kind person.

“With great sadness I can confirm that the gentleman who was attacked and killed on Wednesday in Tarzana was the actor James Handy,” she said.

“I could not have asked for a more talented, humble or gracious client and friend than James Handy.”

Handy was born in New York and built a long Hollywood career that stretched across decades.

He made his television debut in 1977 on the soap opera Ryan’s Hope before landing his first big-screen role in the 1981 military drama Taps, which also starred Tom Cruise, Sean Penn and Giancarlo Esposito.

Handy would later appear alongside Cruise again in the 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, where he played Jimmy the bartender.

His other memorable film roles included an exterminator in the 1995 hit Jumanji, a part in the 1990 thriller Arachnophobia, and a doctor in the 2017 superhero film Logan.

Handy was also a familiar face on television, appearing in a long list of crime dramas and fan-favorite shows, including NCIS: Los Angeles, CSI: NY, NYPD Blue, Law & Order, The Closer, Cold Case and The X-Files.

His death has stunned fans and colleagues who knew him as a hardworking character actor with an impressive resume and a reputation for humility.

Gledhill remained in custody as the investigation continued.
