Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper and his girlfriend were both arrested after an alleged domestic blowup inside his apartment spiraled into a physical struggle and a damaged phone, according to police records.
Cooper, 28, was taken into custody by Parker police at 11:16 p.m. Thursday and booked into the Douglas County Jail at 2:38 a.m. Friday.
The NFL standout was still behind bars as of 10:30 a.m. local time Friday, records show. He appeared before a judge in Colorado’s 23rd Judicial District Court Friday morning, with another hearing set for Monday.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by The Daily Mail, the drama began when Cooper and his girlfriend, Jade, who police said he has been dating for “approximately four years,” got into a heated argument over allegations that he had been cheating.
Jade allegedly grabbed Cooper’s phone, threw it across the room, then tried to retrieve it so she could look through it, according to the affidavit.
Cooper told police he grabbed her by the upper arms while trying to get the phone back. He said he eventually recovered the device, but when Jade allegedly tried to grab it again, he braced his neck against hers to stop her from reaching it.
After the struggle ended, Cooper allegedly picked up Jade’s phone from the couch and threatened to break it if she did not leave the apartment.
Cooper later admitted to officers that he bit the phone, causing what police described as “disabling damage,” according to the report. Officers said the phone had a cracked screen.
Both Cooper and Jade were arrested on alleged domestic violence and criminal mischief charges.
The Denver Broncos said they are aware of the situation.
“We are aware of the matter and are gathering more information,” the team said in a statement.
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy also confirmed the league is monitoring the case.
“We are aware of the matter and have been in contact with the club,” McCarthy said.
The arrest comes as a stunning off-field turn for Cooper, who has become one of the most important pieces of Denver’s defense.
The Broncos selected Cooper in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. Since then, he has worked his way into a major role and played every single game over the past three seasons.
He has recorded 27 sacks and helped lead Denver back to the playoffs last season.
In November 2024, the Broncos rewarded Cooper with a massive four-year contract extension worth up to $60 million, including $33 million guaranteed.
Cooper’s rise in the NFL has been especially dramatic because of serious heart concerns before the start of his career.
He missed the offseason program as a rookie after undergoing three heart procedures and was nearly fitted with a pacemaker. His draft stock slipped after an EKG raised red flags, revealing he needed another cardiac ablation — a procedure used to restore a normal heart rhythm.
Now, the Broncos defender is facing a very different kind of battle as the legal process moves forward.
