The British royal family is facing a shocking new security scare after armed police officers guarding Windsor Castle were allegedly caught sleeping on duty and leaving key posts unattended.
The claims have sparked serious fears that senior royals may have been left dangerously exposed at one of the most famous royal residences in the world.
An urgent internal investigation has now been launched by the Metropolitan Police Service after allegations surfaced involving roughly 20 to 30 officers from the Royalty and Specialist Protection unit assigned to guard the Windsor Castle estate.
The accusations are explosive.
Some officers allegedly slept while on duty. Others are accused of failing to show up at assigned positions during frontline protective shifts.
For a royal site with a long history of security threats, officials are reportedly treating the claims as far more than a simple workplace discipline issue.
Windsor Castle has already faced several alarming breaches in recent years.
In 2021, a man carrying a crossbow got onto the grounds after reportedly saying he was “here to kill the Queen.” Last year, another alleged trespasser who was reportedly under the influence of drugs scaled a wall at the castle grounds.
Now, the latest allegations are raising uncomfortable questions about whether security standards have slipped at a site that protects the royal family and welcomes huge numbers of visitors.
One source familiar with the investigation said there is real concern that some officers may have grown complacent because Windsor can seem quiet for long periods when senior royals are not constantly moving around the estate.
But security experts know those quiet stretches can be risky.
Predictable routines and lowered attention can create openings for people with dangerous intentions.
“The fear is not simply about officers nodding off,” the insider said. “The wider concern is that any lapse at a site protecting members of the Royal Family could create an opening for somebody with far more dangerous intentions.”
According to claims now being reviewed by the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards, some officers allegedly left posts unattended while others were accused of sleeping during armed protection duties.
One claim reportedly involves an officer signing in for an armed protection shift but failing to properly report to the position they were supposed to cover.
If proven true, insiders say that would be viewed as an extremely serious lapse because of the sensitivity of the location.
Windsor Castle is not just a historic landmark. It is a working royal residence and one of the most high-profile protected sites in Britain.
King Charles and senior royal household officials are understood to have been informed about the probe, though Buckingham Palace declined to comment publicly.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the investigation in a statement, saying its Directorate of Professional Standards had launched an urgent inquiry after concerns were raised about the conduct of officers on protective duties at Windsor Castle.
The force said the allegations include officers leaving posts unattended and sleeping while on duty.
“The alleged behavior falls below the high standards expected of officers, particularly in frontline protective roles,” the Met said.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct has also been informed. Decisions about whether any officers should remain on active duty are expected to be made soon.
The scandal comes as Windsor Castle remains one of the most sensitive royal sites in the United Kingdom.
The sprawling 655-acre estate hosts state visits, investitures, major public events, and appearances by senior royals including Prince William, Princess Catherine, Queen Camilla, and King Charles.
It also attracts more than one million tourists every year.
That makes protecting the site an enormous challenge.
One source with knowledge of royal security operations described Windsor Castle as almost like a small town, with multiple access points, tourists, staff, official vehicles, deliveries, and public events all happening around a royal residence.
From a policing perspective, the insider said, it is one of the most demanding royal sites in the country.
That is why the allegations have caused such concern.
Even one unattended post could become a weak spot.
The latest controversy follows another frightening security incident in October 2024, when thieves stole a pickup truck and quad bike from a nearby estate farm before smashing through a security gate while Prince William, Princess Catherine, and their children were reportedly sleeping nearby at Adelaide Cottage.
Now, the Met is under pressure to determine whether officers responsible for protecting one of Britain’s most important royal residences failed to do their jobs at the worst possible place.
