Football Star Accused of Shocking Impersonation Plot

A former Alabama football standout is now at the center of a jaw-dropping federal fraud case that sounds more like a Hollywood script than real life.

Luther Davis, a defensive tackle who helped deliver a BCS national championship to Alabama in 2010, is accused of masterminding an elaborate scheme where he allegedly transformed himself with wigs, makeup, and fake identities to impersonate NFL players—and walk away with nearly $20 million in fraudulent loans.

According to federal prosecutors in Georgia, Davis didn’t just pretend to be one player—he allegedly posed as three different NFL stars over a span of more than a year, from May 2023 through October 2024. The real players, identified only by initials in court documents, are not accused of any wrongdoing.

Authorities say Davis and his alleged accomplice, CJ Evins, pulled off the scheme by convincing lenders they were dealing directly with high-profile athletes. When it came time to seal the deals, Davis allegedly showed up on Zoom calls in full disguise, using fake IDs and doctored financial records—some even featuring photos of real NFL players pulled straight from the internet.

In one bizarre detail straight out of a crime drama, prosecutors say one of Davis’ disguises included a durag-style head covering as part of his attempt to sell the illusion.

The duo allegedly secured at least 13 separate loans before the operation unraveled. Investigators claim the money was funneled through a network of sham businesses before ending up in their personal accounts, where it was spent on luxury items like real estate, cars, and jewelry.

Now, both men are facing serious federal charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Their plea hearings are set for April 27, where more details of the alleged scheme could come to light.

If proven, the case could go down as one of the most outrageous sports-related fraud scandals in recent memory—blending celebrity impersonation, high-tech deception, and millions in stolen cash.
