What should have been a routine trip turned into a split-second catastrophe — and for dozens of passengers, there was no escape.
At least 26 people, including five children, are dead after a crowded passenger bus suddenly plunged into the Padma River in Bangladesh — sinking so fast that many inside never had a chance to get out.
The doomed bus, carrying around 40 people, was approaching a ferry crossing in the Rajbari district on Wednesday evening when it reportedly lost control and veered off a pontoon straight into the water.
Then, in an instant — it was gone.
Witnesses say the vehicle disappeared beneath the surface within moments, triggering screams of panic from those nearby as helpless onlookers watched passengers trapped inside.
Rescue teams rushed to the scene, but the conditions were brutal. Strong river currents and heavy rain turned recovery efforts into a nightmare, with divers battling the elements through the night in a desperate search for survivors.
By morning, the scale of the tragedy became clear.
Authorities confirmed at least 26 bodies had been pulled from the river — including multiple children — with fears the number could rise. The victims include men, women, and entire families caught in the deadly plunge.
Eight people were initially pulled out alive, offering a flicker of hope. But even that was shattered when two of the injured later died in the hospital.
One survivor, Kalam Hossain, described just how quickly the horror unfolded.
“I had just stepped off the bus,” he said. “Within seconds, it sank with everyone still inside.”
Images from the scene show devastated relatives lining the riverbanks, some collapsing in grief as rescue crews hauled bodies from the water and heavy machinery dragged the wreckage from below.
