Music legend Barry Manilow is opening up like never before — and what he revealed is hitting fans hard.
The 82-year-old icon, known for timeless hits like “Copacabana,” has shared a deeply emotional reflection on life after being diagnosed with lung cancer — admitting that the experience changed him in ways he’s still trying to understand.
“You just don’t even think about how fragile life is,” Manilow said in a candid new interview. “And suddenly, you have lung cancer. But I’m still here… I’m not all here. There’s part of me that isn’t here.”
That haunting confession comes after doctors discovered a cancerous spot on his lung late last year — a diagnosis that came out of nowhere.
Manilow revealed the cancer was only caught thanks to a precautionary MRI ordered by his doctor — despite him having no symptoms at all.
“I could go on, nothing hurt… but they found the dot,” he said. “They told me, ‘Could be cancer.’ That’s a bad word. Not me. I can’t have cancer.”
Doctors later told him the cancer could have been growing for years — and if it had spread any further, the outcome could have been very different.
“I thought I might be dying,” he admitted.
To remove the cancer, Manilow underwent a lobectomy — a major surgery that he described as a “nightmare” he can hardly recall.
Still, there was a silver lining: the cancer hadn’t spread, and he didn’t need chemotherapy or radiation.
“I’m one of the lucky ones,” he said.
Now cancer-free, Manilow says the ordeal forced him to take a hard look at his life — and what really matters.
“It made me stop and think… Have I done what I wanted to do? Have I made people happy? Have I been a good friend?”
His answer?
“Yes. And there are more yeses than I ever thought.”
While the experience “rocked” him, the legendary performer says he’s slowly getting stronger — both physically and emotionally.
Despite everything, Manilow isn’t slowing down. The singer is preparing to release a brand-new album, What a Time, this June — proving that even after a life-altering diagnosis, his passion for music hasn’t faded.
And while part of him may feel “missing,” one thing is clear:
Barry Manilow is still here — and still fighting.
