Joy Behar is back at it again, stirring up controversy on The View. This time, her latest off-script revelation involved spilling details about her co-host Sara Haines’ past “lesbian relationship” during a live broadcast—while Haines’ own parents were sitting in the audience.

The shock came near the end of Wednesday’s show. As Whoopi Goldberg casually teased Haines’ upcoming Behind the Table podcast episode, which would feature Haines and her parents, Behar couldn’t resist a dig. She cut in with her signature unfiltered bluntness: “Are you going to bring up that lesbian relationship you said you had, back at Smith [College]?”

The moment went from light-hearted to cringeworthy in seconds. Haines immediately burst out laughing, but it was clear she was caught off guard. Her parents, seated in the studio audience, showed contrasting reactions—her father in stunned silence, while her mother managed a small smirk. In a quick attempt to lighten the awkwardness, Haines turned to her dad, half-joking, “Dad, earmuffs! Earmuffs!” covering her own ears in mock embarrassment.

Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin, visibly shocked, tried to remind Behar that Haines had shared that tidbit off-air, while Sunny Hostin observed, “Now it’s on-air.”

Quick on her feet, Haines shrugged off the moment. “It’s a good thing my dad doesn’t always watch,” she joked. “But now he does.” Though Haines, a graduate of Smith College—a famously liberal, women’s college in the LGBTQ-friendly town of Northampton, Massachusetts—has been married to Max Shifrin since 2014, Behar’s comment seemed to be the latest in her ongoing fascination with same-sex topics on the show.

It’s not Behar’s first time putting Haines in an awkward spot. Just this past June, Behar found a way to steer yet another conversation toward the topic of same-sex relationships.

When openly gay comedian Sandra Bernhard joined The View, she asked Behar if she had ever “gotten it on with a lady.” Behar, never one to shy away from a headline-making answer, replied, “No, but someday I will,” adding with a wink, “I’ll do it in my nineties!”

Not letting the moment slip by without another nudge at Haines, Behar turned to her younger co-host, jokingly calling her a “closet lipstick lesbian” after Haines admitted to visiting a lesbian bar in Manhattan.

At 81, Behar shows no sign of filtering her remarks, leaving many to wonder how much longer The View will allow her to get away with these slip-ups—especially when she seems to be making a habit of digging into Haines’ personal life.
