In a dramatic and tragic turn of events, a powerful storm battered the British cruise liner Spirit of Discovery, resulting in the death of one passenger and injuries to over 100 others.
The interim report by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) sheds light on the harrowing journey that unfolded on November 4, 2023, as the ship was struck by force 11 winds—a weather force categorized as violent, with gusts surpassing 64 mph and waves towering up to 25 feet high.
The vessel, operated by Saga Cruises, had been traveling from Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura, with 943 passengers and 503 crew members aboard. It was initially bound for Las Palmas, but the worsening storm forced a sudden change in course toward A Coruña, Spain, in hopes of safer waters. Yet even these precautions failed to shield the vessel from the relentless storm.
“At around 12:30 on November 4, the Spirit of Discovery lost propulsion in heavy weather while crossing the notorious Bay of Biscay,” the MAIB report states. “The vessel began moving violently while the crew worked urgently to restart the propulsion system.” According to the report, severe weather conditions triggered the ship’s propulsion safety system, sending the vessel into a sharp leftward drift before coming to an abrupt stop.
As the night wore on, the ship endured punishing wind and waves until the early hours of the next morning. Once propulsion was restored, the crew decided to abandon the journey and return to the UK. Upon arrival in Portsmouth, eight passengers required immediate medical attention. Tragically, one of these passengers later succumbed to their injuries, marking the voyage with a somber ending.
Saga Cruises expressed their sorrow over the incident. “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies remain with the family of our guest who died following the storm in the Bay of Biscay,” a spokesperson said. “We are continuing to work with the Marine Accident Investigation Branch, supporting their investigation.”
The MAIB has since launched an in-depth investigation, examining every factor that contributed to the tragedy. “The investigation includes analysis of the vessel’s intended passage, preparations for heavy weather, the on-board response to passenger injuries and damage, and the medical treatment of injured passengers,” the report reads.
