A routine zoo performance turned into a nightmare in seconds after a dancer was suddenly swallowed by flames in front of stunned onlookers — and the heart-stopping moment was all caught on camera.
The terrifying incident unfolded last Wednesday at Nantong Forest Safari Park near Shanghai, where a performer was taking part in a traditional fire dance — a centuries-old Chinese folk act meant to thrill crowds, not send them into panic.
But this show spiraled out of control fast.
Video circulating online shows the dancer, dressed in a flowing red costume, stepping between two flaming hoops as part of the routine. Within moments, sparks ignited her dress — and what started as a flicker quickly turned into a full-blown blaze climbing up her body.
Gasps could be heard as the performer completed just two spins before realizing the danger.
Then came the desperate dash.
With flames rapidly spreading, the dancer bolted toward a nearby river in a frantic bid to save herself. In a scene straight out of a disaster movie, she sprinted across the performance area and plunged into the water — extinguishing the fire just seconds before it could become catastrophic.
According to reports, it took roughly 11 seconds from the moment her dress ignited to when she reached the water.
Miraculously, officials say the performer escaped without serious injuries — a stunning outcome given how quickly the fire spread.
The zoo, which houses nearly 20,000 animals across more than 300 species, has not said whether the fire dance will return to its lineup after the shocking mishap.
