Shocking Twist in Guthrie Kidnapping: FBI Now Treating ‘Kill Threat’ Ransom Notes as Credible

The mystery surrounding Savannah Guthrie’s missing mother just took a chilling turn — and it’s raising serious fears about what may have really happened behind the scenes.

As the search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie drags into its third month, new claims suggest federal investigators are no longer brushing off the disturbing ransom notes that have flooded the case. Instead, they may now be taking some of them very seriously.

According to journalist Ashleigh Banfield, the FBI believes at least two of the original ransom letters — the ones that allegedly threatened to kill Nancy — could be authentic.

That revelation marks a dramatic shift in a case that has been riddled with confusion, false leads, and mounting frustration.

Speaking on her podcast, Banfield broke down what she says is a critical distinction.

“The headline here is the original letters that came to TMZ and local Tucson stations,” she explained. “There were two letters — and they threatened to kill Nancy Guthrie. That’s something we hadn’t heard before.”

For weeks, many questioned whether the notes were nothing more than cruel hoaxes. Even Savannah Guthrie herself admitted most of the messages sent to her family appeared fake.

But she also made it clear there were exceptions.

“I believe the two notes that we responded to… those are real,” she said during her emotional return to television.

Now, according to Banfield, federal authorities appear to be leaning the same way — a development that could change the direction of the entire investigation.

And just as that bombshell dropped, the situation grew even darker.

Two new messages reportedly surfaced, once again sent to TMZ, from someone claiming to have inside knowledge of the case. The sender demanded cryptocurrency in exchange for explosive information — including claims about Nancy’s fate.

“I know where her body is, and who the kidnapper is,” the person allegedly wrote, demanding half a bitcoin upfront.

Then came the line that sent chills through the case:

“She is dead.”

The sender went even further, proposing a second payment if their information leads to a public arrest.

Despite the shocking claims, the person insists they were not involved in the abduction itself — instead portraying themselves as someone who stumbled upon critical details and is now being ignored.

In a bizarre rant, the writer lashed out at investigators, claiming millions have been wasted while they’ve been offering answers “on a silver platter” since early February.

But in a twist that only deepens the mystery, another message from the same source paints a completely different picture.

In that version, the sender claims Nancy may still be alive — allegedly seen in Sonora, Mexico.

“I saw her alive with them,” the message reads, adding that the writer isn’t interested in reward money, only what they consider a “fair” payment to disappear quietly.

Conflicting claims. Threats of death. Possible sightings across the border.

And now, federal authorities taking at least part of it seriously.

Behind the scenes, the pressure is intensifying as questions grow louder about how the case has been handled — and whether critical time has already been lost.

With no confirmed sightings, no arrests, and a trail of disturbing messages pointing in multiple directions, one thing is becoming clear:

This case is far from cold — but it may be far more dangerous than anyone initially believed.
