A quiet coastal morning turned into a nightmare in southern Brazil when a small plane plunged out of the sky and erupted into a massive fireball — all caught on shocking video.
The deadly crash unfolded around 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 3, in Capão da Canoa, a seaside city in Rio Grande do Sul. Authorities say a Piper Malibu aircraft had just taken off from Capão da Canoa Airport and was headed for São Paulo when something went terribly wrong.
Within moments, the aircraft began losing altitude.
Then came the impact.
The plane slammed directly into the Dom Inácio restaurant — triggering a violent explosion that sent flames and debris shooting into the air. Terrifying footage circulating online shows just how close the disaster came to becoming even worse, with pedestrians and cyclists narrowly escaping as the aircraft streaked low overhead before crashing.
All four people on board were killed instantly.
Officials later identified the victims as business figures Déborah Belanda Ortolani and Luis Antonio Ortolani, along with pilots Nelio Maria Batista Pessanha and Renan Eduardo Saes.
According to Brazil’s Civil Defense, the aircraft struck a pole near the end of the runway moments after takeoff — a possible clue in what investigators are now calling a rapidly unfolding disaster.
“The aircraft lost altitude and hit a restaurant that was closed,” officials said, confirming emergency crews rushed in immediately, evacuating nearby homes and locking down the area.
Miraculously, the restaurant was empty at the time — a twist that likely prevented an even higher death toll. Authorities confirmed no injuries were reported on the ground.
First responders, including military police, firefighters, and forensic teams, swarmed the scene as thick smoke billowed into the sky. Residents were forced out of nearby homes as crews worked to secure the wreckage and search for evidence.
The plane, a six-seater owned by Jetspeed Holding Ltda, is now at the center of an active investigation as officials try to determine exactly what caused the sudden loss of control.
Brazil’s governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, called the tragedy “a sad event” and said full resources had been deployed to respond.
“The area has been evacuated and remains under control,” he said, offering condolences to the victims’ families and the shaken community.
As investigators dig into the final moments before the crash, one chilling reality is already clear — this disaster could have claimed far more lives if the timing had been even slightly different.

FIREball.
