Stampede Leaves 8 Women Dead at Temple in India

A peaceful morning of prayer turned into sheer chaos and heartbreak in eastern India after a deadly crowd crush at a packed temple claimed the lives of at least eight women.

The tragedy unfolded Tuesday at the Sheetla temple in Bihar’s Nalanda district, where hundreds of devotees had gathered as they do every week. But within seconds, the spiritual gathering spiraled into panic when a sudden surge of people triggered a stampede.

Witnesses say the situation escalated almost instantly.

Videos from the scene show desperate crowds packed tightly inside the temple grounds as screams rang out and people struggled to escape. Police and local villagers rushed in after being alerted, launching frantic rescue efforts.

Several others were injured and rushed to a nearby government hospital in Bihar Sharif.

One devastated devotee said the tragedy could have been prevented.

“They should have stopped people from entering when the crowd kept growing,” the woman told local media, describing how her mother was swept away in the crush. “I kept calling her, but the crowd carried her inside.”

Another eyewitness claimed there was little to no control in place.

“The barricades broke, and suddenly people started falling,” he said. “There was no proper police presence.”

Authorities have since shut down the temple and launched an official investigation into what went wrong.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced compensation for the victims’ families, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident “deeply painful,” offering condolences and financial support for both the families of the deceased and those injured.

But for many, the answers can’t come soon enough.

Deadly stampedes at religious gatherings in India have become an alarming pattern. Massive crowds, limited infrastructure, and poor crowd control have repeatedly turned sacred events into scenes of tragedy.

Just in recent years, similar incidents have claimed dozens — even hundreds — of lives across the country.

Now, another grieving community is left asking the same haunting question:

How many more lives will it take before these disasters are prevented?
