Wendy’s Manager Shoots Customer Over Chicken Order in Drive-Thru Horror

What started as a late-night fast food run turned into a scene straight out of a nightmare.

A Missouri Wendy’s manager is behind bars after police say a dispute over a chicken order escalated into gunfire — leaving a customer fighting for his life and a restaurant shaken.

According to authorities, 47-year-old Terrence R. Phillips is facing serious charges including first-degree assault, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon following the shocking incident at a Kansas City Wendy’s on North Oak Trafficway.

Police say officers rushed to the scene around 11:30 p.m. on March 20 after reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found a man bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound to his chest. Before being taken to the hospital, the victim told officers the shooter appeared to be a manager at the restaurant.

The victim later recounted that he had simply gone out to grab food for his family. But confusion began almost immediately at the drive-thru. After pulling up to order, he was reportedly told to skip the speaker and drive straight to the window — something that didn’t sit right with him.

What followed was a tense exchange.

According to the arrest affidavit, the victim described the employee’s attitude as rude, saying things only got worse when he reached the window. After receiving his order, he drove off — but moments later, his drinks spilled. Frustrated, he circled back looking for help, but claims employees ignored him.

That’s when things allegedly took a violent turn.

The man told police he saw Phillips outside. Without warning, Phillips allegedly pulled out a gun and fired, striking him in the shoulder. The bullet reportedly exited through his chest, leaving him seriously injured.

Surveillance footage appears to back up key parts of the story. Investigators say video shows Phillips walking into the parking lot, followed by what looks like a faint muzzle flash. He then returns inside, allegedly with a gun tucked into his pocket.

But it doesn’t end there.

Officers later discovered a firearm hidden inside the restaurant’s walk-in freezer — a detail that has stunned many following the case.

After being read his rights, Phillips admitted there had been a verbal confrontation. He claimed the situation escalated after the customer returned and allegedly used racial slurs. Phillips also said he stepped outside to close the hatch of his car and told the man to leave.

However, he denied ever firing a weapon.

Police weren’t convinced.

Phillips was arrested and booked into the Clay County Jail, where he’s currently being held on a $1 million bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 31.

As investigators continue piecing together what happened, one thing is clear: a routine fast food stop spiraled into a life-threatening encounter that no one saw coming.
