Savannah Guthrie is living every family’s worst fear — and now she’s asking a heartbreaking question she can’t shake: was it all because of her?
The Today show anchor broke down in an emotional interview as she revealed the gut-wrenching moment she learned her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, had vanished — and the crushing guilt that followed.
“I just said, ‘Do you think because of me?’” Guthrie recalled asking her brother. The response? Devastating. “I’m sorry, sweetie… maybe.”
From that moment on, everything changed.
The call came from her sister — simple, but terrifying. “No… mom’s missing.” At first, Guthrie hoped it was something explainable, maybe a medical emergency. But that hope quickly collapsed.
Her mother’s phone was still there. Her purse hadn’t been touched. Nothing added up.
“It just didn’t make any sense,” Guthrie said, describing the chaos that followed as she frantically called hospitals while police swarmed the scene.
What investigators believe happened next is chilling.
Nancy was reportedly taken from her Tucson home in the early hours of February 1, with surveillance footage capturing a masked figure lurking outside just before her disappearance. Nearly two months later, there are still no arrests — and no clear answers.
Despite a staggering $1 million reward being offered, the case has stalled, leaving Guthrie and her family trapped in what she describes as pure agony.
And through it all, one thought keeps haunting her.
“That it’s because of me… that someone thought they could make money,” she said, fighting back tears. “I’m so sorry, Mommy. I’m so sorry.”
The emotional toll has been relentless. Guthrie revealed she wakes up every single night, unable to escape the images in her mind.
“In the darkness, I imagine her terror,” she said. “It’s unthinkable… but those thoughts demand to be thought.”
Now, she’s pleading with whoever is responsible — or anyone who knows something — to come forward.
“Someone needs to do the right thing,” she said. “She needs to come home now.”
Meanwhile, outrage is growing over how the investigation is being handled. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos is facing mounting pressure to step down, with critics accusing him of mishandling the case and pointing to a controversial past that’s now back under scrutiny.
Local officials are even discussing forcing the sheriff to testify under oath, as calls for accountability intensify.
But for Guthrie, the politics and pressure take a backseat to one thing: bringing her mother home.
Until then, she’s left with grief, guilt — and a question that may never fully be answered.
