‘Trainee’ Vet, 27, Killed by Pregnant Hippo in Shocking Zoo Tragedy

A routine night shift turned deadly in an instant.

A 27-year-old trainee veterinarian tragically lost her life after being violently attacked by a pregnant hippopotamus at a zoo in southern India — a horrifying incident that has now sparked an official investigation.

Dr. Sameeksha Reddy was working at the Tiger and Lion Safari in Shivamogga, Karnataka, when the unthinkable happened. According to local reports, she had initially been tasked with treating a sick bird. But at some point during her shift, she made the fateful decision to check on a pregnant hippo that had reportedly stopped eating.

What happened next unfolded in seconds.

Despite not being assigned to the animal, Reddy approached the enclosure late on March 19, using a thermal scanner in an attempt to assess the hippo’s condition. Believing the massive animal would remain in the water, she reportedly climbed into the enclosure using a ladder.

That assumption proved deadly.

Officials say the hippo suddenly became aggressive, shaking the ladder and sending Reddy crashing into the pond below. Within moments, the powerful animal attacked.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital, but her injuries were too severe. She died the following morning.

Zoo officials later confirmed that the hippo’s behavior — including staying in the water and refusing food — was not unusual, especially during pregnancy. Staff members had reportedly been warned about the animal’s unpredictable nature.

“This was quite normal for a hippopotamus,” one senior veterinary official explained, adding that Reddy had not been instructed to interact with the animal.

Now, questions are mounting.

Authorities are investigating how and why the trainee entered the enclosure without authorization — and whether proper safety protocols were followed or enforced.

The tragedy has left colleagues and officials shaken, with one senior staff member calling it a devastating loss and offering condolences to her family.

Meanwhile, officials say new measures are being put in place to ensure a disaster like this never happens again.

But for one young veterinarian, a split-second decision ended in a heartbreaking and irreversible outcome.
