A shocking family dispute in West Virginia has taken a violent and almost unbelievable turn — with authorities saying a man shot his own father in the face with a crossbow and somehow, the victim survived.
Chase Fleming is now facing a charge of malicious assault after the terrifying incident on March 17, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. Details are still unfolding, and it’s not yet clear if Fleming has entered a plea or hired an attorney.
Investigators say the situation spiraled out of control after a heated phone argument between Fleming and his father. The confrontation didn’t end there — authorities say Fleming went to his father’s home, where things escalated even further.
That’s when, according to officials, the unthinkable happened.
Sheriff Ross Mellinger said Fleming allegedly fired a crossbow at his father, striking him just below the left eye. The bolt reportedly traveled through his head and exited out the back — injuries so severe the sheriff himself admitted he was stunned the victim survived.
“How the guy is still alive is beyond me,” Mellinger said. “It’s really remarkable.”
Despite the gruesome injuries, the father is currently alive and listed in stable condition at a local hospital.
Fleming didn’t go quietly. Authorities say he was captured only after a snowy foot chase that stretched across two counties. After his arrest, he was also taken to the hospital for medical evaluation before being cleared for jail.
He’s now being held on a $250,000 bond and is expected to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on March 25.
