The Sussexes’ Netflix fairytale may be turning into a full-blown Hollywood nightmare.
A bombshell report claims Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos is so over the drama surrounding Meghan Markle and Prince Harry that he allegedly won’t even get on the phone with Meghan unless a lawyer is listening in.
Yes—according to a new Variety story, three sources claim Sarandos has become “fed up” with the couple. And two insiders reportedly said he recently made it clear he wouldn’t sit for a call with Meghan, 44, without legal counsel present on the line.
Even the sources admitted they couldn’t tell whether Sarandos, 61, was dead serious or joking. But in Hollywood, this is the kind of “joke” that lands like a grenade—because it suggests trust has snapped and the relationship is now being handled like a potential liability.
Netflix and Meghan’s camp immediately went into damage-control mode.
A Netflix spokesperson flatly denied the story, calling the claim “absolutely inaccurate.” Meghan’s attorney, Michael J. Kump, blasted it as “blatantly false,” insisting Meghan “texts and speaks with Mr. Sarandos regularly” and has even been to his home—“sans lawyers.”
Netflix insiders also rushed to insist there’s no bad blood, saying Sarandos and his wife, Nicole Avant, are friendly with the Sussexes and socialize with them in Montecito, where they’re reportedly neighbors.
But here’s why the rumor hit so hard: the timing is atrocious.
The Variety report also pointed to Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria allegedly “growing weary” of the streamer’s pact with Harry and Meghan—another sign, sources claim, that patience inside the company is thinning. Bajaria publicly praised Archewell Productions, calling them “thoughtful and collaborative,” and said the couple is “deeply engaged” in storytelling and brings a “unique, global perspective.”
That’s the polished statement. The behind-the-scenes whispers are the messy part.
And the Sussexes’ Netflix orbit has been taking hits lately.
The couple’s blockbuster Netflix deal was originally negotiated in 2020 and widely reported as being worth $100 million. But later reporting said they signed a new deal worth less than the original—fueling speculation that Netflix has been quietly recalibrating expectations.
Then came the latest blow: Netflix reportedly cut ties with Meghan’s lifestyle brand, As Ever, earlier this month after her series With Love, Meghan was canceled after two seasons, reportedly due to disappointing ratings.
That show wasn’t just a series—it was basically a glossy sales engine meant to help launch and promote Meghan’s products. Losing that platform is a branding punch to the gut.
Still, sources claim the Sussexes aren’t fully cut off. Archewell Productions reportedly still has a deal with Netflix, and insiders say multiple scripted and unscripted projects remain in development.
But after a headline like this—lawyers, “fed up” execs, and rumor-fire spreading fast—the bigger question is unavoidable:
If Netflix really has to treat a simple phone call like a legal event… what’s happening behind closed doors that nobody wants on the record?
