A night of high-speed racing in Texas ended in heartbreak after a deadly crash involving two emergency vehicles during a World of Outlaws dirt track event.
The shocking incident happened late Saturday night at Kennedale Speedway Park, a popular dirt racing venue just outside Fort Worth.
According to early reports from fans and witnesses, the chaos began when driver Marcus Thomas flipped his car during the race. As safety crews rushed onto the track to respond, two emergency vehicles heading toward the crash site collided.
The collision turned deadly.
Race organizers confirmed Sunday morning that one official was killed and another suffered serious injuries in the crash.
“While officials were responding to an incident at Kennedale Speedway Park on Saturday night, two emergency vehicles collided, resulting in serious injury to one official and a fatal injury to another,” the World of Outlaws said in a brief statement.
Officials added that an investigation is now underway and the remainder of the event was postponed following the tragedy.
The identities of the officials involved have not yet been released, and organizers have not provided an update on the condition of driver Marcus Thomas after his initial crash.
World of Outlaws is one of the most popular touring dirt racing series in the country, often referred to by fans as “The Greatest Show on Dirt.” The high-octane series travels across the United States each year, drawing huge crowds to dirt tracks nationwide with races scheduled through November.
The racing community quickly began reacting to the heartbreaking news.
Driver Carson Macedo shared a message on social media Sunday morning asking fans to keep those affected in their prayers.
“Please keep the World of Outlaws family in your thoughts and prayers after last night’s horrible incident,” Macedo wrote. “Praying hard for the officials, their families, and everyone involved.”
Fans who were at the track described the moment of impact as chilling.
“They were both heading to the accident site,” one attendee wrote online. “It shows how much respect we need to give these safety responders. They risk their lives to protect the drivers.”
Another fan recalled the moment the crash happened.
“I’ll never forget the sound when they collided. The whole crowd gasped and then everything went silent,” the witness said. “I was sitting in the pit grandstands and immediately knew it was bad.”
Tributes quickly poured in for the fallen official.
“Deepest condolences to everyone who knew the official who tragically passed away,” another fan wrote. “Prayers for a speedy recovery for the injured official.”
For many in the racing world, the tragedy was a stark reminder of the dangers faced not just by drivers on the track, but also by the safety crews who rush in when things go wrong.
