Princess Diana may have had a very different vision for the future of the monarchy — one that put Prince Harry on the throne instead of his older brother, Prince William.
New claims making the rounds in royal-watcher circles suggest Diana believed William, now Prince of Wales, never truly wanted to be king. The late princess allegedly worried he was too shy and wasn’t built for the “top job,” and she quietly leaned into the idea that Harry could one day take over from their father, King Charles.
According to royal commentator Richard Kay, Diana even had a nickname for her youngest son that said it all: “Good King Harry.” Kay claims the princess felt Harry had the personality and instincts to thrive in the spotlight, while William, when he was younger, came off more reserved and unsure about the role fate had handed him.
Kay said Diana confided in him that she didn’t believe William was eager for the crown — and in her mind, she was preparing the ground for Harry as a future king.
But reality, obviously, went another direction.
Kay also argued that the public mood today is firmly behind William as the future monarch, especially given Harry’s estrangement from the royal family and years of headline-grabbing fallout. In his view, the “consensus” is that the monarchy ended up with “the right one” as Prince of Wales.
Still, the bigger problem for William isn’t just family drama — it’s the institution itself.
Kay warned that William may inherit a monarchy facing its most uncomfortable public questions in decades, including criticism over royal wealth, multiple residences, and the optics of extravagance during a time when many families are struggling financially. He predicted William will likely continue Charles’ long-discussed plan to slim down the monarchy, moving it toward a more low-key, European-style model where fewer royals are front and center — and where the whole operation looks less expensive to maintain.
And then there’s Kate.
Insiders continue to frame Princess Kate as a stabilizing force inside the palace — the calm center in a stormy era. In the latest whispers, her steady, measured approach is described as essential to keeping public confidence intact, with some even claiming she’s become the backbone of the institution at a time when William is seen as more emotionally pressured by the weight of what’s coming.
If these Diana claims are true, they add a jaw-dropping twist to an already complicated royal story: a mother who allegedly saw the crown landing on the son who was never “supposed” to wear it — and a future king now relying heavily on his wife to keep the monarchy standing.
