Body Found Amid Search for Savannah Guthrie’s Mother

A horrifying discovery along an Arizona canal has sent a jolt through the already-frantic search for Savannah Guthrie’s missing mother — and it’s reigniting fears that this case is heading toward the worst possible ending.

Phoenix police confirmed they found a woman’s body near a canal on Friday, March 6, after a call reported an adult female on the canal bank who was “unresponsive.” Officers arrived and she was pronounced dead at the scene. No identity has been released.

But here’s what’s chilling: the body was found more than 100 miles from Tucson — the same city where Nancy Guthrie, 84, disappeared from her home on February 1 without a trace.

Authorities have not confirmed the woman is connected to Nancy’s case, and investigators say there is currently no official link between the Phoenix death and the Tucson disappearance.

Still, the distance, the timing, and the fact that Nancy vanished under suspicious circumstances is enough to make this new development feel like a nightmare turning real.

Nancy’s disappearance exploded into a national story because of her daughter, Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie — who rushed to Arizona as the search ramped up.

Since then, Savannah has offered a staggering $1 million reward for information that leads to Nancy’s safe return — or the recovery of her remains. That wording alone has sent a grim message about how serious investigators believe this situation may be.

Detectives have suggested Nancy may have been taken from her home during the night. Even more disturbing, security footage reportedly captured a masked man lingering near her front door shortly before she vanished — a detail that has horrified viewers and turned the case into a true-crime obsession.

Investigators have also said they recovered a significant amount of evidence from Nancy’s home, including traces of blood. Officials have warned the forensic process — especially anything involving DNA — can take an agonizingly long time.

And while results crawl through the system, the search remains intense, with hundreds of personnel still assigned to the case.

This all comes as Savannah made her first appearance at the Today studio since her mother disappeared. NBC said she stopped by to thank her colleagues — but added she’s still focused on her family and doing everything possible to bring Nancy home.

Now, with an unidentified woman found dead near a Phoenix canal, the pressure is sky-high — and the questions are louder than ever.

Because until that body is identified, one terrifying possibility hangs in the air: could this be the break in the case… or the moment this search turns into a tragedy?
